SCOOBY MEDINA DEL CAMPO

Scooby Medina is the largest galgo rescue organization in Spain.  It is located in Medina del Campo, about an hour north of Madrid.  Scooby operates almost entirely on donations and has grown with the loving support of distant organizations like Scooby North America.  Every month vans from European adoption groups and Scooby "branch organizations" pick up and transport 10 - 60 dogs to loving homes all around Europe.  This is critical to allow Scooby to continue rescuing large numbers of dogs.

In addition to galgos, podencos and other hunting dogs, Scooby rescues mixed breed dogs, cats, and a variety of farm animals.  Because adoption of farm animals is almost unheard of, the horses, cattle, goats and donkeys live out their lives at Scooby, being fed and well cared for in a safe environment.  The twelve dedicated paid staff are supplemented by a steady stream of volunteers from around the world who spend a week or two at Scooby to tend, feed and socialize all the animals.  Scooby is also assisted by veterinarian volunteers from around the world who provide free or low-cost surgery and routine medical care to all of the animals.

Fermin Perez is the founder and operator of Scooby Medina.  While running a growing rescue shelter in his "spare time", he is also a full time high school science teacher in Spain.  His patience and dedication inspires us all to save as many dogs as we can while we work to change the callous animal welfare culture and traditions in Spain.

Scooby Accomplishes:  Education of new generations

Scooby welcomes class tours from any local school. The children are allowed to pet the animals and educated about proper care of animals, why they are rescued and what Scooby is all about.

When the children go home, they often do projects like this and send their work back to Scooby.

Scooby also has open house days once a month where anyone from the community is welcome to visit. Here Dani talks about the horses who live at Scooby.

Local Spanish media also visits to do special television and radio shows. Here Fermin explains what Scooby does and why it's important to have enforced animal welfare laws.

Scooby Accomplishes:  Care of all animals with the help of the local community

The local industrial companies have donated/loaned many acres of unused land to Scooby for the rescued farm animals.

Local restaurants and other companies often donate truckloads of unwanted foods like carrots and stale bread. When truckloads of carrots are dumped at Scooby, it's like Christmas for the farm animals!

This is life at Scooby for the farm animals. It just can't get much better than this!

Scooby Accomplishes:  Acquiring dilapidated boarding kennels and perreras and converting them to actual shelters

Scooby is occasionally called upon to take over perreras (killing stations). When this happens, Scooby cleans up the facilities, feeds and rehabilitates the starving, sick and injured dogs that are there, and turns the former killing station into an actual shelter that cares for the dogs until they're adopted.

Taking over perreras is an expensive task. They're usually in such bad condition that they need many renovations and the dogs are usually so overcrowded and sickly that they have to be transported to Scooby Medina for medical care.

After the facilities are cleaned up, they are cared for by very dedicated Scooby staff, like the Residencia in Valladolid. Scooby Residencia is operated by a very dedicated lady named Cobie. She does a great job of caring for sick animals and helping them to recover from trauma and abuse.
