ABOUT US
Scooby North America started in 2005 in Canada and in 2009, we registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit in the United States. In 2014 Scooby Canada became an independent organization to be a voice between Scooby Medina and the people of Canada.
Scooby North America was organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to be the voice between the Scooby Animal Refuge in Medina del Campo, Spain and the people of North America. By partnering with Scooby Medina we strive to end the mass killing of hunting dogs of all breeds at the end of the yearly hunting season in Spain and bring about legislation and enforcement of Spanish animal welfare laws so that the dogs are properly cared for. While we work on these long-term goals, we also assist Scooby Medina in relieving some of the population pressure at the shelter by transporting some dogs to North America for adoption.
To accomplish these goals our objectives are:

Why did I get involved with Galgo Rescue?
"Back in 2007, the Greyhound group that I was involved with in Virginia decided they were going to add the assisting the galgos to part of their mission statement. So another volunteer and myself decided to go to the Scooby shelter to volunteer and bring home two galgos to place in our adoption program. It was a trip that I will never forget. When I returned home I wanted to move my family to Spain. This wasn’t a problem as my husband can work from anywhere. I was the problem as I had the golden handcuffs of a government job on my wrists and we just weren’t financially able to do at the time. So now I had to figure out what I needed to do to help. I decided to contact the Volunteer Representative that assisted me with my trip. I told her “I left my heart at the shelter.” What can I do and when can I start helping. So she immediately set me up as the Virtual Adoption Coordinator for the United States and Canada. After that things moved quickly. I saw the need in 2009 to start a non-profit in the United States to do fundraising and educational sessions on the Galgo. Scooby North America was approved as a North American Non-Profit in October 2009. I did this because… • To rescue is simply to love • I saw the love and despair in their rich brown eyes • I saw the fear and sadness in their thin bodies • I saw the flea bitten, matted skin. • The mistreatment from the hunters that I wanted to soothe • I wanted to fight for them because others won’t • I can’t turn my back on their plight because I want to ease their pain and fear • I want them to love as they have never had love before • I want them to know that their life matters Each adoption is a treasure to behold. This is my happiness. This is my love and devotion. And I can do it because I can." |
